Writing Workshop: Scared Silly… still

3.) Something that scared the Hell out of you when you were a child. (inspired by Mama Sick)

I chose this prompt and want to dedicate it to the 4^th graders who, while in the girls’ bathroom, told T2 all about Bloody Mary and Chuckie… resulting in T2 having a sleepless night last night.

Scary movies. Two in particular. Poltergeist and Halloween 2. As much as I love Halloween and do enjoy a good scream in a haunted house, I cannot enjoy horror movies.

I think we watched Poltergeist as a family. We did that back then—rented a VHS tape from VideoWorld. (How’s that for dating myself?) I think my mother was very cautious but I still insisted on watching. And yup, bad dreams abounded! (I still find myself shuddering when I see the commercials for Paranormal Activity 3 and the children moving all over…)

I was older when I saw Halloween 2. It was summer. I hadn’t even seen the first one. Maybe I was 6^th or 7^th grade… my neighbors had cable and one of them and I were done swimming for the day so I was invited over to watch it. What. Was. I. Thinking??? I spent the entire summer making sure I never had my back to my window—which was level with the ground as we had a partially sunk foundation—and left my closet doors open at all times, and every time I went into the bathroom I flung the shower curtain open. Not sure what I would have done if Jason was standing there but hey, at least I wouldn’t have been caught unawares. It was so bad that we children were playing hide and seek and I found my brother in the shower, looked at him, was about to say “Caught ya!” and he goes “Boo!” and I screamed so bad I probably burst a blood vessel or two. (But this is why I love haunted houses—to get a scream like that again!)

Stephen King’s It also scares me. I do NOT like clowns. That is like the ultimate haunted house scare for me. And they know it, like I have a big ol’ bull’s eye on my forehead or back or whatever. I’m an easy scare.
