Let’s Not Forget The Merchant Marine on Memorial Day, OK?
May 26, 2014Let’s Not Forget The Merchant Marine on Memorial Day, OK?.
Thank you, Enchanted Seashells, for this reminder of the oft overlooked sacrifices of the Merchant Marine. Couldn’t have said it better.
I would be interested in seeing current data on civilian ships used in conflict today. I know that the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is the ONLY federal military academy to have students (midshipmen) in war zones during its entire history, up to and including the present.
I’ll ask hub if he knows anything about that; he’s an encyclopedia about the MM, plus he’s taught maritime EVERYTHING so if he doesn’t know something, I’d be surprised! I honor your Merchant Mariner on this day and every day 🙂
And to yours. I agree with you and some others for pointing out that the day is actually a somber MEMORIAL for those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, thereby differentiating the day from Veteran’s Day (another observance leaving out the mariners).
PS Thanks for the reblog, forgot to mention that!
No problem. As I said, I couldn’t have said it better. 🙂
