Columbia River Bar Pilot Fell into Water

March 7, 2012

DH directed me to this piece of news on Capt. Deb. Dempsey. Earlier this week she fell into the Pacific Ocean at night after completing a pilotage down the Columbia River. thankfully she was rescued after only minutes in the water. DH knows have always been interested in Capt. Dempsey’s story as the first woman to graduate from a maritime school.

Capt. Dempsey’s story can be read in the Captain’s A Woman.

For more information about the incident, please see:

  1. I read the accounts and the rescue sounds easy until I read about one fellow dying!

    • I’ve watched a night-time pilot transfer before and that takes some skill. There was a Learning Channel program that featured Capt. Dempsey and helicopter transfers–not sure that’s any better. When you also think that she did not have on a Gumby suit (extreme weather survival suit) because of how cumbersome it is, I just start shivering. Even those few minutes could have been deadly. Thanks for stopping by!
