E.o.t.T.: Lesson learned…

July 27, 2011

…never get blood work taken when you have a sinus infection. Back in March I was really blown away by the fact my blood sugar, total cholesterol, and LDLs were back up to levels in my pre-Torturer days. I was actually asking what was the point of torturing myself if the gains are only temporary. I mean, I know if I stop working out, the gains will definitely only be temporary but I wasn’t expecting this. So I had blood work ordered to figure out what is going on with the foot and hand inflammation and I asked if we could have the sugar and cholesterol panel redone, even though he felt my numbers were all within normal ranges for his practice (I’m one of his younger patients I think). Well I got good news: my blood sugar is way back down and so is my total cholesterol and I have a rockin’ HDL which counterbalances my LDLs (don’t know what that number was). So it is all worth it. 🙂

And my first tests for this inflammation problem were all negative too. Now we’re doing more tests and trying something else for the next 2 1/2 weeks. I have also been forbidden to do any physical activity other than walking. My torturer is not happy and keeps saying “You have to be your own advocate.” Believe me, Torturer, I know something is not right. You’ve taught me to work through pain and I’ve seen pulls and strains heal… this, this is something more. I have to advocate for that first.

I have some of the Walk Fit videos and I’m going to find a track to do some laps on. This is just temporary but it will stink having to build up my endurance again. 😦

Not What I Expected…

July 25, 2011

I was at camp with T1 this time around. T2 was getting spoiled at Camp Grammy/MawMaw. T1 has always been the more demonstrative child, more free with kisses and expressions of love. While I had been away with T2 during her week of camp, I received text messages and “Tell Momma” messages added to the e-mails sent to T2 from T1 (who was having her turn at Camp Grammy/MawMaw) just about every day, if not more than once a day.

T2 texted me twice (and I’m being generous here) the ENTIRE week.

I was telling the counselors and other teachers about how different T1 and T2 are, how each expresses confidence in vastly different ways. I used the nonexistent text messages as proof.

When I got home T2 hugged me fiercely and declared how much she missed me. “Yeah? Then how come you never texted or e-mailed? Just one text message!”

“But Momma, you said we weren’t allowed to play with Grammy or MawMaw’s phones any more!”

Ooops.

E.o.t.T.: I may complain…

July 15, 2011

…but the Torturer is worth every penny I pay him.

Now I have mystery swelling in my left hand. Pretty much exactly what has been going on in my left foot. And I was told no weight-lifting now. Okay, I’m already up a good 5 pounds easy from not running for the past 6 weeks (and cheating on the diet; I know, I know, I get it.) and now you want me not to “pump iron”?

While we try to figure out these mystery symptoms, the Torturer has already begun to modify my exercises to protect the hand but still allow me to weight-lift. I benched 95 lbs. today! And in between sets, I hold the offending hand up in the air to relieve the swelling.

X-rays are negative–no breaks, no dislocations.

Waiting on blood work.

Symptoms that I believe are all related:
1. right middle finger started hurting after lifting T1’s mattress off loft; swelling on and off for the past year; general “arthritic pain”*
2. chest wall inflammation from Dec. 2010 to March 2011; made me believe I had asthma; I had begun bench pressing and dumbbell flies in late November 2010 when symptoms started.
3. Left foot injured playing Wii at end of April; note both feet were injured but left shoe has a 12 mm heel lift to help even out my hips so it is like wearing a low heel all the time; ran on it for a month before crying “uncle.” Has a permanent bruise color on the top of the foot.
4. July 1st felt arthritic achy feeling in left hand pinky. Bench pressed that day, felt a little pain in knuckle from that; by Sunday July 3rd finger swollen like a sausage and could no longer bend it. It is hot to the touch and is reddish/purple like foot.

Being test for lyme (* not sure if the right hand problem was before or after I had been to Bible camp in 2010; two other teachers have had lyme disease), rheumatoid arthritis, and other general inflammatory diseases/illness. Will ask for the more accurate lyme test to be sure; will ask about fibromyalgia though I don’t believe I have the pressure point pains.

I’m trying not to worry it is more than just arthritis. I’m trying to leave it up to God. I’m going to power through my workouts but be realistic about the pain–no need to injure myself further. I’m having good days and bad days. Today was a good day.

Tooting My Own Horn!

July 13, 2011

I would like to thank Chris from Bridges Burning  who stumbled upon my blog because of Mama Kat’s Pretty Much World Famous Writing Workshop and decided I deserved some awards for the work I’ve been doing on this blog. It has been an interesting journey and now I feel even more validated than just having DH ask if he made the blog today. The best part is that Chris says my posts on maritime related information have been informative which is my secondary purpose for this blog. Thanks again for the coodos, the awards, and the publicity!
